**Here is Today's assignment for all Students!**
Objective: Family members of all generations share the
music that was passed down to them from relatives and members of the community,
then have a family sing-along.
1.
First, watch these videos and reflect on
how music is passed down from one generation to the next:
2.
Next, each member of the family identifies 3-5 songs they love that
were introduced/passed down to them from a relative or member of the community.
Spend some time to individually
make a list of your songs and to jot down who introduced each song to you, when
and where they introduced it, and any special memories you associate with each
song.
3.
Collect each family member’s song list, and create one family playlist
on Spotify or YouTube that includes all of the special songs.
Use the links below if you need help!
4.
Sit in a circle and, when it is your turn, introduce one of your songs
by sharing your memory of how you came to know the song (When? Where?
From whom? With whom?), what you
think of when you hear it, and why it is so special to you. Then, listen together!
Continue around the circle, one song at a time, until all songs on the
playlist have been introduced.
5.
As a family, vote on your top THREE songs.
For each, search for a YouTube video that
includes the lyrics. Have a family
sing-along!
Extension 1: If there
is a dance that goes along with one or more of your songs, teach the steps to
your whole family, and dance together!
Extension 2: What songs today must be passed down
to the next generation? Discuss as a
family.
Extension 3: Explore Carnegie Hall’s Lullaby Project and
consider how lullabies pave the way for families to pass music down from one
generation to the next:
